Hi, I’m Shakira Barbarossa, and I’m here to help you navigate life’s challenges with care and understanding. Originally from Puerto Rico, I speak English, Spanish, and some Italian, allowing me to connect with diverse individuals in a meaningful way.
Life’s transitions such as divorce, relationship struggles, the loss of a loved one, relocation, or career change can be overwhelming. You don’t have to go through them alone. I provide a safe and supportive space where you can process these experiences, build resilience, and move forward with greater clarity and confidence.
As a mental health provider, I hold a master’s in science with a concentration in Mental Health Counseling from Jacksonville State University in Alabama.
How can I help you?
I am trained in EMDR and have experience working with couples, teens, teens in the spectrum, and adults. I use a combination of Cognitive Behavior Therapy, EMDR, Mindfulness, Self-Compassion, and aspects of Positive Psychology. I love what I do, it is my passion to help people discover their best selves by guiding them through the process of understanding and overcoming their internal challenges in a nurturing environment.
My philosophy on mental health
I believe that a strong and trusting bond in counseling allows the client to feel comfortable and secure in sharing thoughts and feelings which allows a process of healing and personal growth. I adopt a client centered approach, working collaboratively with clients to develop personalized treatment plans tailored to their unique needs and objectives.
How Do I Practice Self-Compassion:
I practice self-compassion by thinking about the kindness and understanding I would offer a close friend who is struggling. I do grounding exercises using loving-kindness meditations, as well as wrapping myself in a blanket, sipping tea, and listening to soothing music.
Fun Facts About Me:
I lived in Japan for 3 years and immersed myself in the Japanese culture. I also competed in a Body Building Competition as a challenge to myself and I have a fascination with the “Flamboyan” tree (Royal Poinciana Tree), I currently have 2 at home.
During my free time, I like to create art by doing collages in oyster shells. I also enjoy traveling and learning about new cultures, going to the beach, and planting trees native to my country in hopes they thrive.
